YAFAL – Yet another favourite/free application list

Many blog readers have very likely come across a list of somebody’s favourite applications. I’ve learnt a of a one or two new ones this way, but mostly these I have found in my own searches. Some are open source, and some aren’t but they are still free.

Over the years these applications have made my top 10 list because they are slick and get the job done without any frills.

Firefox Internet Explorer no longer dominates the Internet browser space purely because it cannot keep up with the innovations an speed of the other modern browsers. Firefox is my browser of choice because of the many plug-ins that make the browser even more powerful. More about plugi-n’s later. firefox

1) It works on Linux too, so you’ll be familiar with it when you use a system with Linux (not common, but its a nice-to-have in my case)

Winamp Winamp is probably the oldest application on this list.  Its the mother and father of all media players. winamp-bento
AT Notes Electronic Post-it Notes. It has many features additional features, including alarms, sending to remote users. atnotes
My Phone Explorer My Phone Explorer is an amazing light weight application that allows you to control you Sony Ericsson phone from your PC. No other Sony Ericsson software is needed. It competes with Sony Ericsson’s PC Suite. You can sync you calendar, send SMS’s download/upload content to/from your phone and much much more. myphoneexplorer
Free Commander Free Commander a much easier to use alternative to Windows Explorer. For those of you that remember Norton Commander, this will bring a smile to your face. A dual panel is so much more practical than a single one! freecommander
Open Office OpenOffice.org 3 is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose. writer-big

Paint.NET Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins. Its not PhotoShop, but it comes close. getpaint
VLC VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player supporting most audio and video formats. It plays DVD’s, CD’s and just about any file format without having to download codecs vlc-win32

  1. I’ve recently switched over from Paint.NET to GIMP. It has pretty much all the functionality you’d find in PhotoShop, if not more. Check it out here
